Governors
Welcome to the Governor pages!
The role of the Governing Body of the School is best summarised as being
- Strategic
- A critical friend
- Accountable
Being strategic requires us to think ahead, have a vision of what the school will be like in the future and to explain how we are enabling the school to achieve its goals.
Identifying the school’s strengths and areas for improvement enables us to plan for the future and ensure that resources are allocated to the agreed priorities. Governors therefore have a responsibility to be involved in identifying priorities, developing the school plan and contributing to its self evaluation which summarises the school’s judgements about the quality of provision.
To carry out these responsibilities the Full Governing Body (FGB) meets at least 3 times a year and conducts most of its business via the following sub committees:
- Finance and Staffing
- Curriculum and Standards
- Premises (incl Health and Safety)
Each of the sub-committees meets at least once a term and reports its activities and business to each FGB meeting.
Swindon Borough Council has a Governor Support section that offers support, legal advice and training to the community of school governors throughout Swindon. Their Website provides a useful starting point for the resources and support available http://www.swindon.gov.uk/schoolsonline
What you need to know to become a Governor.
What does membership involve? Everyone has work or life skills that could be useful to the Governing Body. As part of a team you benefit from the help, advice and support from governor colleagues in the collective aim to provide the best teaching and learning environment for the staff and pupils.
Do I get any training? The governing body subscribes to the Swindon Governor Support Service which allows all governors, who wish, to benefit from the comprehensive training modules they provide.
What time do I need to commit? All governors are volunteers but it is important that you are at least able to attend the full Governors Meetings. If your time and commitment allows, your are also encouraged to join one of the sub-committees and get involved in school activities.
Who can I talk to about becoming a governor at the school? We welcome new recruits and if you are interested in joining us, then, in the first instance, contact the school office. They can arrange for you to talk to a current governor about what is involved. You can also register your interest with the Swindon Governor Support Service.
